The eyes are our windows to the world and our most important sensory organ, but, by the time we hit 50, everyone suffers from presbyopia. Worse yet, half of all people over 60 are affected by cataracts, with a further one in two of these receiving an intraocular lens (IOL).

Biolnics DeepSight bio-inspired IOL is designed to restore natural, healthy eyesight. DeepSight specifically mimics the unique combination of softness and elasticity of young and healthy eyes; essentially rejuvenating the eyes ability to see clearly across the near-to-far sight spectrum.

The current corrective eyesight options like glasses, contact and intraocular lenses, have major limitations, and, in many cases can only cover-up some of the symptoms, but not cure or address the problem.

Our DeepSight technology replaces the hardened, aged lens core with a new natural elastic lens core; its just like rewinding your eyes clock. Plus, you can finally lose the annoying glasses for good. DeepSight is finalizing the production technology and is ready to move forward with clinical trials on humans, but we cant do this without your help, Dr. Josef Jansen, founder of biolnic and head of DeepSight.

Not only are cataracts and presbyopia huge markets, the global eyewear market is expected to reach USD 142.18 billion by 2020 and 2014 saw the 20 millionth LASIK procedure performed, since inception, at one of the more than 1,000 clinics in the USA.

The beauty of the DeepSight implant is its simplicity of design and the medical procedure is similar to conventional IOLs, which can be performed in as little as 10 minutes, Dr. Andreas Schoth, physicist, engineer and a university senior lecturer at the University of Freiburg.

Among the many projected ancillary DeepSight benefits are increased productivity, reduced fatigue, improved workstation comfort, as well as a slew of other mental performance, activity and maintenance remunerations.

The micro injection molding of DeepSights highly elastic precision components presented unique challenges, but the technology can help the end-users realize lower long term costs compared to other visual aids, Dr. Ben Whiteside, Director of the Centre for Micro and Nano Molding at the University of Bradford.

DeepSight is currently raising funds on the indiegogo.com crowdfunding platform, which allows interested parties to be part of our visionary project to open the path for enhanced quality of life in advanced age, by regaining youthful vision.

About Bionic:

biolnic, or bionic intraocular lens (IOL), is focused on improving the quality of life, by naturally unlocking the way the world treats cataracts and presbyopia. The group was formed as the result of a combined effort of independent researchers who were brought together via the European Union supported COTECH Project (http://www.fp7-cotech.eu), with an aim to incorporate cutting-edge micro fabrication technologies to create the finest medical device breakthroughs.

The group works closely with their world-class research partners; the Centre for Polymer Micro and Nano Technology at the University of Bradford (UK), the Department of Microsystems Engineering (IMTEK) at the University of Freiburg (Germany) and the Department of Experimental Ophthalmology at the University of Münster (Germany).
