According to researchers from Switzerland, they have developed a contact lens that has the ability to provide telescopic functionality. The research team said that the contact lens contain a very thin telescope built into it that enables users to have magnified vision. This will help people with serious visual problems like macular degeneration, or other retinal illnesses where people have severe vision loss.

"We think these lenses hold a lot of promise for low vision and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). It's very important and hard to strike a balance between function and the social costs of wearing any kind of bulky visual device," said Optics specialist, Eric Tremblay from Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne in Switzerland.

The new is 1.55 millimeter thick and contains a telescopic component that gets activated by winks. The new lenses come with smart glasses that reply to the user's winks, so that the user can switch almost easily from normal to magnified vision and back.

According to the researchers, the user winks with the right eye to activate the telescope and to deactivate it, user winks with the left eye. The lens can magnify an object up to 2.8 times and it means that with its help, AMD patients can read more easily. Also, it helps them to better recognize faces and objects. It has also been informed that originally the lenses meant to serve as a form of bionic vision for soldiers.

The researchers said that they require to conduct more research and development. The research team hopes that soon it will be an advanced option for people with AMD.
