The Department of Engineering Mechanics at Dalian University of Technology (DUT) was founded in 1957 by two distinguished Professors – Prof. Lingxi Qian andProf. Limin Tang. 

In 2007, the Engineering Mechanics was recognized as the first-class national key discipline of Mechanics. Together with the ‘State Key Laboratory of Structural Analysis for Industrial Equipment’, the department established the research excellent centers for ‘Theories and Method of Computational Mechanics and Engineering Science Computation’, ‘Biomechanics and nano-mechanics’, ‘Modern theory and Algorithm of Structural Optimization’, etc. The department possesses excellent academic members, including 3 members of the Chinese Academy of Science (Wanxie Zhong, Gengdong Cheng and Changyu Sheng), 7 National Outstanding Young Scholars and 14 Ministry of Education ‘Trans –Century and the New Century Talents’. 

The Department of Engineering Mechanics is also the center for many national and international academic activities. In recent years, more than 24 national and international conferences were organized and held here. It has established long-term collaborations with more than 20 overseas famous universities and research institutes, including Durham University, UK, University of California, Berkeley, etc.
