The Institute has 6 professors, 5 associate professors, including 1 Distinguished Young Scholars and 1 outstanding youth scholar. Bionic and Micro/Nano/Bio Manufacturing Technology Research Center Opened up a new field of Bio-machining in 1996. They have proposed a series of bio-aided machining schemes varying from bio-removing forming, bio-limited forming, bio-replicated forming, bio-jointed forming, bio-growing forming to bio-self-assembled forming, and published many original path-breaking papers, which became the first paper published in “Nature” regarding mechanical engineering science in China.
The Institute of Bionic and Micro-nano systems in Beihang University was established in 2017. In 1996, the institute leader Prof. Zhang pioneered the Bio-manufacturing technology and gradually built up the bioinspired & biological manufacturing technical system for micro-nano complex structures since then.
4 major research areas are constructed in the institute: 1) Bio-manufacturing and bio-forming technology; 2) Bioinspired functional surfaces and micro/nano fluid; 3) Bioinspired functional materials; 4) Bioinspired sensor and micro-nano robot systems.
The institute has established a multidisciplinary cross-research team under the close cooperation from Prof. Zhang Deyuan, Prof. Huawei Chen, Prof. Jun Cai, Prof. Yonggang Jiang, Prof. Xinggang Jiang, and Prof. Lin Feng. All the members of this are young, passionate and energetic. In recent year, the research team extends their interests to micro/nano scale dynamic mechanism, and smart systems. Several novel mechanisms were first discovered such as unidirectional liquid transport and water ultrafast transport. They also published first Nature paper in the mechanical engineering field of China. More than 300 papers have been published in recent five years, and more than 100 of them have been indexed by SCI. The publishing journals include Nature, Nature Materials, Advanced Materials, Advanced Functional Materials, Small, Journal of Materials & Chemistry A, etc.
The institute focuses attention on the novel design of micro/nano scale functional structure and the formation process of hierarchical structure or materials to enhance the application level of bionic engineering. With the high-speed development of nanotechnology, they widen applications to precision medicine and flexible electronics. Another goal of this institute establishment is to cultivate influential youth scholars of bionics in the world, strengthen the external cooperation and exchange in science and technology to improve the international academic influence.
